A Drive in the Country and to the Beach

Today, we got in the car and drove, first, to Xcambo, a small, ancient, Mayan site, through the cleanest Mexican village we have ever been--Baca. We then went on to the coast where we found a marina with three sailboats. Somehow we cannot keep ourselves from searching out the places where people parks boats, even though this part of the Yucatan isn't known as a sailing destination. The road east along the coast was under construction and we had to turn south toward a town we had not intended to visit. On the way, we found pink water in a lagoon a few miles inland from the sea. Then we headed back toward the water and to Dzilam de Bravo, on the coast, where instead of eating fish, we ate puerco con frijol, the dish that everyone in the Yucatan serves on Mondays. And then home. It was a good trip and we didn't get lost once.

Baca. There was even a person picking up what little trash was in the town.

As we turned off the road to Xcambo, we saw this trogon--I think that's what it is. This is the time I'd give my eye teeth to have a long lens. The bird is about the size of a blue jay, but with two, long, delicate tail feathers which were about 8 inches long. I've only seen pictures of this bird and it was a thrill to see one in the flesh.

This plant grew low to the ground, almost like a vine. The blossom is about an inch in diameter.

Our Xcambo guide.

Pink water. This was unexpected. The stakes are part of the salt mining or salt pans that are around this area.

We don't know why the water is pink, but we are near the pink flamingo areas, although I doubt if the flamingos make the water this color.

In Dzilam de Bravo. I'm pretty sure this is Benito Juarez.

Boats on boats at Dzilam de Bravo.

I shouldn't include this as the flamigos are pretty far away, but it's proof we finally got close enough to take a snap. Again at Dzilam de Bravo.

Cattle as well as flamingos are around. This is a small pick-up. I cannot imagine how the rancher managed to get the three animals in there.
