Oaxaca--the first days

The drive from San Cristobal was mostly through mountains and it was gorgeous, although mined with topes and double semi trucks toiling up and down the mountains. We passed through the lowlands of the Tehuantepec Pennisula and discovered what they meant by the Tehuantepeckers--winds which begin in the Caribbean and accelerate until they are nearly gales when they pass into the Pacific. Below is a quick stitch of an overview.

The gate to our apartment complex. It's quite nice inside, but Mexicans rarely want to show much of what's inside the gates. In a day or two I will get pictures of the inside of our apartment and the grounds inside the gates. Tagging is even more prevalent in Oaxaca than it was in San Cristobal de las Casas.

I think Kent and I will have to find a better paleteria (popsicle shop).

This is a typical street between our apartment and Centro. Ah, mountains within sight. Oaxaca will be hotter than San Cristobal, but it won't be anything like Merida and we hope that we will be comfortable. We're something over 5000 feet above sea level here.

A complicated stem.

The cathedral. The parks near the cathedral were the places of the deadly demonstrations and riots in 2006. Everything is much calmer now and the parks have been restored, but Friday, we too found ourselves in the midst of a demonstration in the zocolo. I'll post those pictures tomorrow.
