San Cristobal de las Casas's Cemetery

Just as we were leaving town to drive to Oaxaca, we stopped at San Cristobal's Panteon (cemetery). Most of the tombs here are more elaborate than those in any of the cemeteries in the Yucatan.

The entrance gate says: Life is an illusion; Death is reality; Herein is the kingdom of truth.

Kent thought that these people were probably competitors in life and couldn't stand the thought of one or the other of the familys getting a better tomb, so the second is larger than the first.

There were some modern types too.

And there were derelict ones.

I think this must be a Lutheran tomb.

We weren't sure whether this was a devoted animal or one looking for shade.
